For comfort-led summer wear, the Birkenstock Arizona, Madrid and Mayari are perennial bestsellers. The cork footbed moulds to your foot shape, the leather straps soften with wear, and the construction routinely lasts a decade or more with proper care. Fitflop's Microwobbleboard sandals provide engineered cushioning particularly suited to wearers with foot pain or plantar fasciitis.

For poolside, beach and watersports, Crocs slip-on sandals and the Skechers Foamies range are the practical choice. Both are water-resistant, quick-drying, and lightweight enough to throw in a bag. Hotter, Padders and Drilleys all do wider-fit comfort sandals for customers who need extra room around the toe box.

Sandal sizing tends to be slightly more forgiving than enclosed shoes — straps adjust to accommodate variations in foot width. Birkenstock uses European sizing converted to UK. Most other sandal brands use UK standards directly. Children's sandals follow UK kids' sizing.

Care: leather sandal straps benefit from occasional conditioning. The Birkenstock cork footbed needs sealer once a year to maintain water resistance. Avoid prolonged submersion in chlorinated or salt water for leather sandals — they'll stain or stiffen. Rubber and synthetic sandals (Crocs, Foamies) can be hosed down without concern. With proper care, quality sandals last many seasons.
